In seventy years of operation, from 1955 to the present day, the cable car has transported over 12 million people on their journeys up and down the mountain. It is an astounding figure that definitively rewards the foresight of the 1960s community that decided to defend its identity as an “oasis of peace” – a choice backed by a public consultation in which 60% of the residents firmly chose the cable over the asphalt.

The era of stewardship
Following the initial years of municipal management, the Aosta Valley Region acted as the custodian of Chamois’ cable car for sixty-six years, from 1957 to 2022. This support was vital: by securing the service as a part of Local Public Transport and mantaining affordable fares, the Region enabled the village not only to survive depopulation but to flourish and become known to the world as the only italian municipality accessible exclusively by air.

Back to the roots
On June 1st 2022 a new chapter began: after over six decades, the Municipaliy officially returned to the forefront of managing its own “gateway”. Through the in-house company Chamois Services S.r.l., the community took back the helm of the cable car. This return to managerial autonomy generated a new energy, bringing the annual passanger numbers up from 130.000 in 2023 to 144.000 in 2025.

A conscious evolution
The commitment to enhancing hospitality and efficiency never stops. The automation of the turnstile access system and the recent graphic design project that made the stations more welcoming, are tangible signs of a continuous renovation – soon to be joined by the installation of a new elevator. These are the forward-looking steps of a cable car system that knows how to innovate technologically without betraying its soul. Today more than ever, the bond between Chamois and its path through the air is unbreakable: an identity-defining force that keeps tracing the future of an authentic, silent, and proudly unique mountain in the sky.

Una scommessa vinta: 12 milioni di volte
I numeri oggi raccontano una vittoria che va oltre ogni previsione. In settant’anni di attività, dal 1955 a oggi, la funivia ha trasportato circa 12 milioni di persone tra salite e discese. È un dato che lascia a bocca aperta e che premia definitivamente la lungimiranza di quella comunità che, negli anni ’60, seppe difendere la propria identità di “oasi di pace”, confortata da una consultazione popolare in cui il 60% dei residenti scelse fermamente la fune contro l’asfalto.

Il tempo della custodia
Dopo i primi anni di gestione comunale, per sessantasei anni, dal 1957 al 2022, la Regione Valle d’Aosta è stata la custode del collegamento a fune di Chamois. Questo supporto è stato vitale: garantendo il servizio come Trasporto Pubblico Locale e mantenendo tariffe accessibili, la Regione ha permesso al borgo non solo di sopravvivere allo spopolamento, ma di fiorire e farsi conoscere nel mondo come l’unico comune d’Italia raggiungibile solo per via aerea.

Il ritorno alle origini
Il 1° giugno 2022 è iniziato però un nuovo capitolo: dopo oltre sei decenni, il Comune è tornato ufficialmente protagonista della gestione della propria “porta di accesso”. Attraverso la società in house Chamois Servizi S.r.l. a socio unico, la comunità ha ripreso in mano il timone della funivia. Questo ritorno all’autonomia gestionale ha generato una nuova energia, portando i passaggi annui dai 130.000 del 2023 ai 144.000 del 2025.

Un’evoluzione consapevole
L’impegno per migliorare l’accoglienza e l’efficienza non si ferma. L’automazione dei sistemi di passaggio e il recente progetto grafico che ha reso le stazioni più accoglienti sono i segni tangibili di un rinnovamento già in atto, a cui si aggiungerà presto il progetto di un nuovo ascensore. Sono i passi di una funivia che sa guardare avanti e rinnovarsi tecnologicamente senza mai tradire la sua anima. Oggi più che mai, il binomio tra Chamois e la sua via aerea è indissolubile: una forza identitaria che continua a tracciare nel cielo il futuro di una montagna autentica, silenziosa e orgogliosamente diversa.

En septante ans d’activité, de 1955 à nos jours, le téléphérique a transporté environ 12 millions de passagers, entre montées et descentes. C’est une donnée qui laisse bouche bée et qui prime définitivement la vision clairvoyante de cette communauté qui, au cours des années ‘60, sut défendre son identité de «oasis de paix», validée par une consultation populaire où 60% des habitants choisirent fermement le câble en opposition à la route.

Le temps de la sauvegarde
Après les premières années, pendant soixante-deux ans, de 1957 à 2022, la Région Autonome de la Vallée d’Aoste a été la gardienne de la liaison par câble du téléphérique de Chamois. Ce support a été vital : en garantissant ce service en tant que Transport Public Local et en gardant des tarifs accessibles, la Région a permis au bourg non seulement de survivre au dépeuplement, mais aussi de s’épanouir et de se faire connaître dans le monde comme l’unique commune d’Italie accessible exclusivement par câble.

Le retour aux origines
Le 1er juin 2022, un nouveau chapitre a commencé : après plus de six décennies, la Commune est redevenue officiellement protagoniste de la gestion de sa propre «porte d’accès». Grâce à la société in house Chamois Services S.r.l., la communauté a repris dans ses mains le gouvernail du téléphérique. Ce retour à l’autonomie de gestion a créé une nouvelle énergie, favorisant la progression des 130.000 passages annuels en 2023 jusqu’aux 144.000 en 2025.

Une évolution clairvoyante
L’engagement pour améliorer l’accueil et l’efficience ne s’arrête pas. L’automatisation des systèmes de passage et le récent projet graphique qui a rendu les gares plus accueillantes sont les signes tangibles d’une rénovation déjà en marche, à laquelle on ajoutera bientôt le projet d’un nouvel ascenseur. Ce sont les pas d’un téléphérique qui sait regarder en avant et se rénover sur le plan technologique sans jamais trahir son âme. Aujourd’hui plus que jamais, le binôme entre Chamois et sa «voie de l’air» est indissoluble : une force identitaire qui continue à tracer dans le ciel le futur d’une montagne authentique, silencieuse et orgueilleusement différente.
