The sign

Between the earth and the sky.

The current cable car station preserves a symbol that links ancient faith with modern technology.

Once, in the village square, stood the “Great Cross”: an imposing wooden cross over six meters high that marked the starting point for funeral processions heading down toward the valley.

With the inauguration of the cable car in 1955, this heritage was taken up by the “Crucifix” gifted by Luigi Meynet to the people of Chamois. Initially mounted onto the side of the old Agudio station, the artwork represented the village’s welcome to technical progress. On November 12th 1973, with the inauguration of the new Ceretti & Tanfani system, the Crucifix was moved to its final location: on the facade of the upper station, facing the square and the Church.

Even today, the “Cable Car Christ” welcomes residents and tourists on their arrival, remaining a silent witness of the passage of time. As highlighted by Elvis Baravex, administrator of Chamois Services S.r.l., the visibility of this sing is fundamental since it represents a common thread linking different generations of cable systems that have succeeded one another over the years, while also being the symbol of a community that embraced progress while staying true to its roots.

“The placement and the visibility of the Cross is very important because – for us and for the community – it’s a “fil rouge” between the various cable car stations that have succeeded one another over the years”
